hath been appointed an Assistant Inspector of Bouldings, in the Public Works Department of Hong Kong for a period of Three years from the date of his arrival in the Colony Now the said John Thomas Hornsby Sample doth agree with the said Undersigned that the terms of his engagement as such Assistant Inspector of Buildings & shall be as follows:-

1. The said John Thames Hornsby Sample will as

soon as required proceed to Hong Kong and on his arrival there will be placed under the general orders of the Surveyor General and more directly under the Government Sanitary Engineer and he will be required to assist the latter in all Engineering Architectural and Sanitary Work and in the temporary absence of the Government Sanitary Engineer the said John Thomas Hornsby Sample will be required to undertake all the duties usually performed by the Sanitary Engineer. He will also be required to undertake any other duties of a professional character which may be entrusted to him by the Surveyor General.

2. The palary to be paid to the said John Thomas Hornsby Sample shall be at the rate of One thousand eight hundred dollars ($1800) per annum payable, in monthly instalments,half
